The Business Names Act came into effect July 1, 1995. A Business Name is defined as the name or style under which any business is carried on. Such business may be carried on by an individual, a firm (partnership) or a company or corporation (registered under the 1992 Companies Act).
Every individual, firm and company or corporation having a place of business in the Bahamas and carrying on business in the Bahamas under a business name which does not consist of the individual’s surname firm’s or company’s name must register their business name and the change of the name if and when it takes place.
An application form for the registration of a business name should be made within fourteen days after the commencement of the business or fourteen days after the change of name.

When registering a name, a valid passport is needed for each applicant. A certificate of registration is issued by the Registrar if the application for registration or change of particulars is approved.
